Sunshine Coast
Tucked into the southwest corner of mainland British Columbia,
just a 40-minute ferry ride from Horseshoe Bay in Vancouver, the
Sunshine Coast is a 180km (110mi) stretch of paradise. Here the
mossy rainforest drops from a sculpted shoreline into the Strait
of Georgia, and winds itself northward beneath the Coast Mountains
from Howe Sound to Desolation Sound.
Named for its 2,400 hours of annual sunshine, this magical
place could also be known as the Scuba Coast, the Romance
Coast, the Fishing Coast, the Serene Coast, the Wildlife
Coast, the Arts & Culture Coast or the Health & Wellness
Coast — titles reflecting the many attributes of the
region.
Populated by dream-seekers desiring the slower paced, coastal lifestyle,
the Sunshine Coast is home to those who appreciate its beauty of outstanding
marine parks and marshland bird sanctuaries, old growth forest and
alpine peaks. A contemplative, quiet environment that has inspired
a large, creative community of internationally known artists, musicians
and artisans. Visitors can find creations showcased in local galleries
and crafts stores, as well as in the artisans own pottery, woodworking,
fibre arts, and glass blowing studios, up and down the coast. These
creative elements, combined with a rich First Nations heritage, is
responsible for numerous country fairs, art and craft events, and
widely acclaimed writing and music festivals that draw visitors from
all over the world, and help to make the Sunshine Coast one of the
most exceptional regions of Canada. Fully guided or self-guided tours
are available to artist studios, gardens and other places of interest.
