Mighty Fraser Country

Named after explorer Simon Fraser, the first European to navigate its waters, the raging Fraser River holds many historic memories and continues to create awe in those who travel its magnificent canyon. For millennia, "the Mighty Fraser" has shaped much of Mighty Fraser country, carving an astounding passage through the Coast Mountains, creating a lush valley of fertile farmland and a broad expanse of delta and wetlands as it nears the Pacific Ocean. The heart of the world's greatest salmon producing river system, the Fraser River is the focus for the region's economy, transportation and culture. In the beginning for the First Nations people, then as part of the Cariboo Wagon Trail, the Gold Rush Trail, both the Canadian National and Canadian Pacific railways, and most recently, for the TransCanada Highway.

Today, the Fraser River is as much a part of the region's vitality as ever, providing passage for log booms and white water adventure for rafters and fishing enthusiasts. But the gentler countryside is an equal draw. With its bountiful dairy farms, berry fields, lakes, streams and forests, the Valley is the "food basket" of the Lower Mainland and is set amidst a colourful backdrop of aboriginal and heritage pioneer sites. Make sure to visit again in 2008 for celebrations commemorating the 200th Anniversary of Simon Fraser's explorations!

With so many U-Pick farms you and the kids could spend the entire day gathering everything from strawberries to blueberries, apples, corn and more. Can you think of a more perfect dessert for a summer picnic? Many farms are located near great family attractions such as Fort Langley National Historic Site and the Greater Vancouver Zoo. In the fall look for pumpkin patches as far as the eye can see. Hayrides and corn mazes are just a few of the memorable harvest activities resplendent in the Mighty Fraser Country.
