Treks on the beach
This beach is for the birds — and birdwatchers too. The southernmost
tip of mainland Canada, Point Pelee has recorded sightings
of 80 percent of Ontario’s documented bird species. Scan the skies
for warblers and bobolinks while hiking one of Point Pelee National
Park’s eight self-guided trails, including the Marsh Boardwalk, which
protects a fragile wetland. And while this sand-lined peninsula hosts
many swimmers, canoeists and kayakers in summer, you might also
want to visit in May, when thousands of songbirds stop in on their
northern migration.

OKANAGAN VALLEY, B.C.
Pick of Penticton
One of the hottest and sunniest spots in Canada, the Okanagan
Valley is a 250-kilometre-long adventure zone drawing vacationers
year-round. Accessed by a steep, coarsely paved trail, the area’s
beaches, including South Beach in Ellison Provincial Park,
boast beautiful sand and clean, warm waters, with gently sloping
bottoms ideal for swimmers. If that doesn’t float your boat, take a
leisurely one-hour journey down the Penticton Channel
from Okanagan Lake to Skaha Lake.

KLUANE NATIONAL PARK AND RESERVE, Y.T.
Northern sights
Bordered by the St. Elias Mountains in Kluane National Park,
Kluane Lake is the territory’s largest lake and a great place
to hike or practise your photography skills. Highway access
makes Kathleen Lake, also in the park, perfect for launching
a boat, although strong winds tend to stir up the waves.
