WHEN YOU TAKE A HIKE in Haliburton Highlands, what's not to like? The sky is blue, the air is pure, the trees are drop-dead gorgeous and the annoying buzz of blackflies, mosquitoes and deer flies is, mercifully, absent. Fall is the most beautiful hiking season and, just two and a half hours north of the GTA, the Haliburton Highlands offer a breathtaking view every direction you look and wilderness peace and quiet that is broken only by the sound of bird calls and squirrels and chipmunks scurrying through the underbrush.

Autumn in Ontario doesn't get any more beautiful than this and, from October 17-18, the inaugural Hike Haliburton Festival welcomes hikers to Canada's first and only hiking festival. The event will also highlight an ambitious undertaking by the Haliburton Highlands Trails and Tours Network to expand and upgrade more than 300 kilometres of the county's hiking trails in the next two years.

You can join in the celebration of body and sole with a GPS Scavenger Hunt; a Get the Scoop on Poop tour with naturalist Kevin Clute, who'll also teach The Scat Rap; an unforgettable hike featuring five spectacular highland views; a geologist-led search for mineral-rich rocks; and a treetop Walk in the Clouds along a 20-metre-high boardwalk. There's also a free barbecue on Friday evening featuring music by singer/songwriter David Archibald and a "night hike" on a new trail.
