EVEN THE MOST DEDICATED adventurer should take time
to stoke the fire within. So shuck off your Polartech,
grab an armchair, and embark on the inner journey with
the help of the whopping 151 titles entered in the mountain
literature competition that is part of the 2003 Banff
Mountain Book Festival. Held annually at the exquisitely
situated Banff Centre, nestled in the Canadian Rockies,
the festival runs from November 5-7 and features
daytime seminars by renowned adventure writers and photographers
who have travelled here from all over the world to celebrate
both the beauty and the risk that are part of mountain
culture. Also on the agenda are readings, signings and
literary lunchbreaks. Among a tantalizing list of participants
this year are Peter Matthiessen, author of In the
Spirit of Crazy Horse and The Snow Leopard;
Maria Coffey (Fragile Edge and Where the
Mountain Casts Its Shadow: The Dark Side of Extreme
Adventure); and Ed Douglas (Chomolungma Sings
the Blues and Regions of the Heart: The Triumph
and Tragedy of Alison Hargreaves).
The Banff Centre — unique in Canada for its dedication
to the arts, leadership development and mountain culture — is
the learning centre that never sleeps. Visit www.banffcentre.ca to
find out more about its rich and diverse programming and
go to www.banffcentre.ca/mountainculture/festivals/book/ to
see a complete list of the books entered in this year's
festival.
