Spending a wintry weekend amid the snowy peaks of the Rockies need not involve extreme speed or
treacherous climbing. It can be an easy-going and luxurious getaway of delicious food and fresh mountain
air. That is exactly what Lori Beattie, owner and guide of Fit Frog Adventures, is offering when she heads
out to guide the company's first gourmet snowshoeing weekend in Alberta's Kananaskis Valley on
March 10-12.
The weekend hiking trip is part of the nine-year-old company's goal to lead people to healthy
lifestyle choices. Their goal of providing fresh fitness programs is evident in the company's motto:
"We keep you hoppin' so you don't croak."
Hitting the trailhead an hour and a half outside of Calgary, the group will snowshoe through
the foothills and into the mountains of the Spray Lake area, where snowshoers can take it easy following
the beaten track of existing snowshoe trails, or challenge themselves by blazing new trails through deep
powder. "Technically, snowshoeing is extremely accessible," says Beattie. "If you can
walk, you can snowshoe. We aren't racing up the mountain. Our goal is to enjoy the peaks."
Participants will set up camp at the rustic and remote Mount Engadine Lodge — the only lodge
down a long road, away from the increasing hustle of the hub of Canmore. "The lodge is set in a
valley blanketed in snow with a hot tub on the balcony that looks out at the snowy peaks," says
Beattie. "And the chef is fantastic."
The weekend's three four to five hour guided snowshoe hikes will be fuelled by gourmet meals at the
lodge. From comforting old-fashioned porridge, fresh bread and fresh fruit, to New Zealand lamb,
handmade spanokopita, or scones straight from the oven for afternoon tea, the food is healthy and
hearty to restore the snowshoers' energy.
"It's so quiet in the winter when you're out there because there are even less people around,"
says Beattie. "It's really peaceful."
