It's show time! At midnight on
Friday, June 11, more than 30 four-member co-ed teams are delivered
to the heart of Ontario's French River region. It's dark. It's
buggy. And it's the top-secret starting line of a 150-kilometre
adventure-race course known as Raid the North.
For the next 36 hours, rain or shine, the teams will be mountain
biking, canoeing, rappelling and trekking their way through
a succession of checkpoints and transition areas to the finish
line where the fastest time wins. According to series manager,
Jane Neville, the victorious will be those who have "mastered
teamwork." Friday afternoon is spent poring over topographical
maps and grid points, strategizing and charting routes. But
most teams have already invested weekends training together
and getting to know one another's strengths and weaknesses,
which handy indeed if you face getting dumped from a zip line
into a cold northern river.
Toronto-based Frontier Adventure Racing (FAR) has built its
world-class reputation by planning environmentally friendly
events that are challenging and fun, and the French River
event is no exception. Series courses are designed to give
all levels of competitors a taste of multi-day, expedition-style
racing, and teams come from all over Canada and parts of the
U.S. to share in the FAR promise: "Real wilderness. Real navigation.
Real adventure." Nobody goes away disappointed.
To entice beginners to the world of adventure racing, Raid
the North French River is partnered with the Salomon Adventure
Challenge, a less-daunting 40-kilometre race held on Saturday,
June 12.
