The 2005 Sea Cavalcade

The little town of Gibsons, B.C., gateway to the Sunshine Coast, boasts 4,000 happy residents. Bordered by the deep blue waters of the Strait of Georgia to the southwest, Howe Sound to the east and Mount Elphinstone to the north, the community basks in year-round moderate temperatures and a spectacular setting. In celebration of their good fortune, the good people of Gibsons throw a party every July that's the talk of the town.

This year's shout-out for summer takes place from July 22 to 24, and organizers have been working for months to make it an event to remember. The 2005 Sea Cavalcade — themed "A Calypso Odys-Sea" — kicks off with a tasty salmon barbecue and the inspired licks of the young Coast Fiddlers in oceanside Winegarden Park. Following opening ceremonies, there's a fireworks display in Gibsons Harbour, and this year, for the first time ever, music is part of the show. Billed as one of the best "small town" fireworks displays in the province, it's guaranteed to thrill both young and old.

Saturday events dawn with a 10 a.m. kayak race in Gibsons Harbour and an 11 o'clock start for the famous Sea Cavalcade Mile, a one-mile road race that tests the skills of competitors of all ages. On Saturday evening, seductive calypso sounds will float through town as a steel band headlines the Swingin' Street Dance.

On Sunday, townspeople and the more than 5,000 people who flock to Gibsons start the day with pancake breakfast, a kids' fishing derby and the historic one-mile swim from Arbours Beach to nearby Keats Island. Three fly-overs by the Fraser Blues, a talented flying squad headed by a former Canadian Forces Snowbirds Lead, will have all eyes to the sky for daily demonstrations of precision formations.

For 2005 cavalcade chair Conchita Harding, the "fun in the park dinner' sponsored by a spectrum of Gibsons churches and groups is the best event that Gibsons has to offer. Together, participants celebrate the dynamic diversity and camaraderie of their small town, perched at the edge of Canada.
