This July and August, squads of intrepid sea-kayakers will hit
the water in five separate expeditions held across Canada to
mark the fifth and final year of Paddle to a Cure. Founded in
2000 by four women who share a personal and political interest
in breast cancer and a passion for the wilderness, Paddle to
a Cure is fund-raising event that offers participants a chance
to put their social consciences to the test in the great Canadian
outdoors. In the summer of 2004, participants will shoot past
the original million-dollar goal set to raise money for the
prevention, diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer and to
provide support and care to people living with the disease.
Founders Anne Myers, Allison Myers, Belinda Clemmensen and Sarah
Oosterhuis have used broad strokes to establish the criteria
for participants, who must be 19 years of age or older, capable
of getting in and out of a kayak and have gathered pledges of
at least $2,500. Landlubbers are welcome to make donations and
to take part in local fundraisers, but the true spirit rests
with being part of the non-competitive, community-based expedition.
This year's event will kick off when participants dip their
paddles in the cool blue waters of northern Ontario on July
17, for one of three Georgian Bay trips open to all skill levels.
The West Coast Gulf Island Adventure launches on August 2 and
welcomes intermediate and experienced paddlers. The East Coast
Island Exploration, also for all skill levels, sets out from
Nova Scotia's Ship Harbour on August 16 for an August 21 arrival
at Taylor Head. Kayaks and all other equipment are provided.
Participants, many of whom are breast-cancer survivors, are
passionate about their "voyages of hope," which give them with
an opportunity to test their strengths, share their experiences
and celebrate the wonders of life on the water.
