By Tracy C. Read
On Saturday, September 27, adventure racers will converge on the Ottawa
River at Fort Coulonge, Quebec, to participate in the ultimate human-powered

Now in its seventh year, the Frontier Adventure Challenge Fall Classic
is a training ground for Canada’s future elite adventure racers.
Created by Frontier Adventure Sports (who also brought us Raid the North
and Raid the North Extreme), The Frontier Adventure Challenge is a year-long
series of races that invites novices to experience authentic multi-sport
adventure racing in the Canadian wilderness. Fun and accessible are the
watchwords of this autumn event, part of the largest adventure racing series
in Canada.
This year’s Fall Classic is taking place at Esprit Rafting in the
Ottawa River’s Pontiac region. Three-person men’s, women’s
and mixed teams will attack a multi-discipline staged course that includes
35 to 40 kilometres of biking, 8 to 10 kilometres of trekking and 18 to
25 kilometres of paddling and riverboarding. Compasses in hand, racers
must also navigate their way through three to four kilometres of wilderness,
marked only with course markers to guide the way to the finish line.
All competitors must complete the course in 14 hours, and all will be rewarded
with a gala awards ceremony. Whatever the outcome, the Fall Classic is a
glorious day in the rugged Canadian outdoors — the right stuff for
igniting a lifelong passion for adventure racing.
