Meet our fun-loving people of the snow and get to know their favourite Canadian places to chill-ax
 |
Marty McLennan "
If I had only one winter day to play, I'd spend it in
the Chic-Chocs in Gaspé, skiing knee-deep in Eastern
Canada's best-kept secret backcountry oasis near Les
Mines Madeleine. And I certainly wouldn't get on my skis
without first packing a fine cheese from the Oka Cistercian
Monastery, an artisan-made baguette from Montréal, a
bottle of red wine and, of course, my camera, lenses and tripod."

I don't have to travel to reach my favourite winter destination
because I already live there. Northern Saskatchewan offers
eight months of cold and snow, wood-heated homes and hockey
rinks carved out of the lake. It's a place where, on
my way to work, I can be accompanied by snowmobiles and, on
my way back, followed by sled dogs eagerly training for their
first race. It's a land of activity and adventure for
those who heed the call. It's also a land of contrasts,
where expensive homes overlook cabins across the bay and where
a cross-country skier and a trapper cross paths, each searching
for solitude in a different way. While the Internet connects
me to the world, northern Saskatchewan connects me to the land,
as winter in this place replenishes my soul."

My #1 spot is Kananaskis Country — known locally as K-Country — in
the front ranges of the Rockies. It's close to home,
and there's tons to do. In winter, I can go backcountry
telemark skiing all over the place, there's track-set
skiing for both skate-skiers and the stride 'n' glide
crowd, there's downhill skiing and snowboarding at Nakiska
and Fortress Mountain resorts, and there's good food
and plenty to drink at the resort restaurants and bars. Oh,
yeah, there's snowshoeing, too, and winter camping, dogsledding
and ice fishing."

"
My favourite winter activity is skating on Lake Louise in Alberta's
Banff National Park under a canopy of stars with the Victoria
Glacier looming behind. Christmas carols, a huge ice castle,
a blazing fire and hot chocolate in front of the Chateau Lake
Louise all make this the most romantic place to spend a few
days during the winter."
